Cat Feeding Schedule: Simple Printable Routine for Cat Owners
A consistent feeding schedule is one of the best things you can do for your cat's health and routine — and one of the simplest to set up.

Cats are creatures of habit. A consistent feeding schedule reduces stress, helps prevent overeating, and makes it much easier to notice when something is off with your cat's appetite.
How Often Should You Feed a Cat?
Most adult cats do well with two meals a day — morning and evening — approximately 12 hours apart. Kittens under six months need three to four smaller meals daily because of their higher energy requirements and smaller stomachs.
Free feeding (leaving dry food available all day) is common but makes it difficult to monitor how much your cat is eating, which can mask early signs of illness.
What to Include in a Feeding Schedule
Meal Times
Set specific times and stick to them. Cats will remind you — often loudly — if you are late.
Food Type and Amount
- Wet food, dry food, or a combination?
- Grams or portions per meal?
- Brand and variety (especially if your cat is on a veterinary diet)
Fresh Water
Note whether you are using a bowl, fountain, or both. Cats on dry food particularly need reliable access to fresh water.
Treats
If you use treats for training or enrichment, log these separately — they add calories and affect appetite.
Adjusting for Different Life Stages
| Stage | Meals per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kitten (under 6 months) | 3–4 | High protein, kitten-specific food |
| Kitten (6–12 months) | 2–3 | Transition to adult food at 12 months |
| Adult cat | 2 | Morning and evening |
| Senior cat (7+) | 2–3 | Monitor weight, may need senior formula |
