What Dog Breed Am I? The Breed Personality Test

Answer ten questions about you — not your house or your budget — and we will match your personality against every breed in our encyclopedia to find your breed twin. Works for cats too.

First things first: which kind of twin?

How we match you to a breed

Every breed in the Plan for Paw encyclopedia is rated from 1 to 5 on the same traits: energy, affection, independence, trainability, intelligence, how vocal it is, how well it gets on with people and other animals, and how much grooming it needs. Your answers place you on those scales too.

The test then measures the distance between you and every breed, trait by trait. A trait your answers said a lot about counts for more than one they barely touched, so a single throwaway answer cannot decide your twin. The closest breed wins, and you can see exactly where you line up — and where you do not.

The nine personality types

The AdventurerNever met a trail you did not like.
The Devoted HeartLoves hard, hugs harder.
The Free SpiritLoyal — on your own terms.
The Team PlayerReliable, keen and quietly brilliant.
The MastermindAlways three steps ahead.
The EntertainerHas opinions. Shares them.
The Social ButterflyNever met a stranger.
The Style IconEffortless? Absolutely not. Worth it? Always.
The Cosy SoulProfessional relaxer.

Why your twin might surprise you

Most "what dog are you" quizzes have a dozen famous breeds and a fixed answer for each button. This one compares you against every breed we cover, so a lesser-known breed often wins because its mix of traits genuinely sits closer to yours. If you have never heard of your twin, that is the best reason to read its page.

Common questions

How does the breed personality test work?

Each answer places you on eight temperament scales — energy, affection, independence, cooperation, brains, voice, sociability and upkeep. Every breed in our encyclopedia is rated on the same scales, so the test finds the breed whose temperament sits closest to yours and shows you where you line up.

Is my breed twin the dog I should actually get?

Not necessarily — and that is worth saying plainly. This test matches personalities, not lifestyles. A high-energy person in a small flat with a long commute might share a temperament with a Border Collie and still be the wrong home for one. Use the readiness calculator before you decide anything.

Can I take it for cats as well?

Yes. Choose cat at the start and you are matched against the cat breeds in the encyclopedia on the same eight scales. Many people like to take it both ways.

Why did I get a breed I have never heard of?

Because the match is on temperament, not popularity. Some lesser-known breeds are a closer fit to a particular mix of traits than the famous ones. The breed page explains what living with one is actually like.

What do the percentages mean?

How close the breed sits to you across all eight scales, weighted by how much your answers told us about each one. It is a bit of fun rather than science — a 90% match means your temperaments line up on almost everything we asked about.
