QR Code Pet Tag: Help Anyone Who Finds Your Pet Call You in One Tap
A QR code pet tag is a tag for your pet's collar or carrier with a QR code that anyone can scan with a normal phone camera. It opens your pet's online profile with your phone number and important care notes — and because the details live online, you can update them any time without buying a new tag.

How a QR pet tag works
1. You create a profile
Add your pet's photo, your phone number, a backup contact and anything a finder should know — allergies, medication, "nervous around dogs".
2. Your pet wears the code
Print the QR code on a tag or card and attach it to the collar, harness or travel carrier. The code links to the profile — nothing personal is stored in the code itself.
3. A finder scans it
Any phone camera opens the profile in seconds. The finder taps Call Owner, or sends you a message and a photo through I Found This Pet — even if your phone is off.
QR pet tag vs engraved tag vs microchip vs GPS tracker
Each one solves a different part of the problem. Here is how they compare:
| QR code tag | Engraved tag | Microchip | GPS tracker | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who can read it | Anyone with a phone | Anyone | Vets & shelters with a scanner | Only you, in an app |
| Update your number | Any time, same tag | Buy a new tag | Through the chip registry | In the app |
| Space for care notes | Plenty — allergies, meds, vet | A line or two | None | None |
| Finder can message you | Yes, with a photo | No | No | No |
| Battery / charging | None | None | None | Every few days |
| Typical cost | One-time | One-time | One-time, at the vet | Device + subscription |
Our advice: keep your pet microchipped — it is the permanent ID shelters rely on — and add a QR tag so the person who actually finds your pet can reach you straight away.
What someone sees when they scan your pet's tag
A clean, mobile-first page that loads in seconds — designed for a stranger standing on a street with your pet on a lead:
- Your pet's photo and name, so they know it's the right profile
- A big Call Owner button
- Care notes that keep your pet safe until you arrive
- I Found This Pet — a message, their contact and a photo, sent to your email
If your pet goes missing: Lost Mode
Switch on Lost Mode and the same QR code instantly shows a red LOST PET alert with where and when your pet was last seen, your number and an optional reward. Anyone can share the page in one tap — to a neighbourhood group, a lost-pets page or a friend nearby. No reprinting, no new code.
Is a QR code pet tag safe? Privacy you control
Old-style tags often print a home address for anyone to read. A QR tag doesn't have to share anything you don't choose:
- The QR code holds only a web link — not your name, number or address
- You pick what the profile shows; email, microchip and vet details are hidden by default
- Location data is stripped from the photos you upload
- A finder's location is never detected — they type it only if they want to
- The profile is kept out of search engines
How to make a QR code pet tag (step by step)
- Create the profile. Add a clear face photo, your mobile number with country code, a backup contact and any care notes.
- Download your QR code. Use the PNG for printing, or the SVG if a tag engraver is making a metal or resin tag.
- Print it big enough. Keep the code at least 2 cm (¾ inch) wide on a collar tag, with a white border around it — dark code on a light background scans best.
- Protect it. Laminate it, put it in a waterproof tag holder, or have it engraved, so rain and play don't wear it off.
- Test it. Scan it with your own phone before attaching it. If your phone opens the profile, so will a finder's.
- Add the carrier card. Print the emergency card for your pet's travel carrier or your wallet — useful at the vet, when travelling or for a pet sitter.

QR pet tag questions
How does a QR code pet tag work?
The tag carries a QR code that links to your pet's online profile. Anyone who finds your pet points a phone camera at the code, the profile opens in the browser, and they can call you with one tap. No app is needed on either side.
Do QR pet tags need an app or a subscription?
Many do — but a Plan for Paw Smart Pet ID doesn't. Finders use their normal phone camera, and you manage the profile from a private link. You pay once; there is no monthly or yearly fee.
Can I change my phone number without buying a new tag?
Yes. The QR code only holds a web address, and your details live on the profile it opens. Edit the profile and every printed tag shows the new number straight away — the code itself never changes.
Is a QR pet tag a GPS tracker?
No. A QR tag has no battery and can't show where your pet is on a map. It works when someone finds your pet and scans it — which is how most lost pets get home. GPS trackers need charging and usually a subscription; many owners use both.
Does a QR tag replace a microchip?
No — keep the microchip. A chip can only be read by a vet or shelter with a scanner, while a QR tag can be read by any passer-by with a phone, often within minutes. The two work best together, and you can add the chip number to the profile.
What information does the QR code show?
Only what you choose. Your phone number and important care notes (allergies, medication) are shown by default; your email, microchip number and vet details stay hidden unless you switch them on. Your home address is never needed.
Does scanning the tag reveal the finder's location?
No. We never detect anyone's location. A finder can type where they found your pet in the "I found this pet" form if they want to — that is the only way a location reaches you.
Do QR pet tags work for cats?
Yes. Attach the tag to a breakaway collar, or use the printable card on a travel carrier. For indoor cats that never wear a collar, the carrier card matters most — that is when cats most often escape.
What happens if the QR code gets scratched?
QR codes have built-in error correction, so a lightly worn code usually still scans. Keep a laminated or resin-covered tag, and simply print or order a fresh one — it is the same code, so nothing needs updating.
Does it work outside the US?
Yes. The profile is a normal web page that opens on any phone with an internet connection, anywhere in the world. Use your full international number (for example +44 or +359) so finders abroad can call you.
