Is Pet Insurance Worth It? An Honest Guide

Pet insurance is one of the most debated topics in pet ownership. Some owners swear by it. Others pay premiums for a decade and never claim. Here is an honest look at when it makes sense.

The Case For Pet Insurance

A single emergency vet visit can cost £1,000–£5,000+. A surgery can reach £3,000–£8,000. Cancer treatment can exceed £10,000.

Most people do not have that available in an emergency. Insurance makes those costs manageable.

For breeds with known health issues — French Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Maine Coons — insurance is almost essential.

The Case For Self-Insuring

Some owners put a set amount each month into a dedicated savings account instead of paying premiums. This works if your pet is a healthy breed, you have genuine discipline and you could absorb a large unexpected bill in the early years.

What to Look For

Lifetime cover — the most important type. Covers conditions on an ongoing basis year after year. Avoid annual or per-condition policies.

Cover limit — £4,000 per year is the minimum. £7,000–£12,000+ is better.

Hereditary conditions — many policies exclude breed-specific conditions. Read carefully.

Excess — fixed excess (£100–£200 per claim) is more predictable than percentage excess.

Common Exclusions

  • Pre-existing conditions (always)
  • Routine preventive care (vaccinations, flea treatment)
  • Elective procedures
  • Dental disease (often)

When to Buy

As early as possible — before any conditions develop that would be excluded as pre-existing.

Keep Records

Insurance companies will request your pet's vet history when you claim. Complete records stored in a health binder make claims faster and reduce disputes.
